If you have a computer and an internet connection you are ready to
host multiple websites. Following the steps outlined below, the only
cost to you will be the domain name registration. First make sure your
internet service provider does not block port 80. Port 80 will be used
to host your website.
Most website developers put lots of time and effort into making a
final site then wonder “Now what? Where do I go from here?” You have
got your site; you have an internet connection; why should you shell
out $10+ a month for someone else to host your site?
Advantages of hosting your own websites:
- Zero startup costs
- Can host as multiple websites
- Host corresponding databases locally
- No limit to the amount of storage space
Disadvantages of hosting your own websites:
- When the internet goes down, so does your sites
- When your server crashes, you fix it yourself
- When your computer crashes and burns, you lose everything
- Privacy and security must be handled by you. (Advice: Make sure
you keep your firewall up and running.)
- It can be expensive to leave your site up 24/7. It's estimated
that the cost of leaving your computer on around the clock is $10 a
month which could be the cost of having someone else host your site.
Here are the steps necessary to get up and running with your
websites:
- Download an Application Server
- Register a Domain Name
- Setup ZoneEdit.com DNS
- Change GoDaddy.com Name Servers
- Setup IP addresses in ZoneEdit.com
- Hosting Multiple Websites

If you decide that you don't want to host your own websites
there are a few alternatives that I'd recommend:
- Energized
Hosting - Very cheap for jsp/java hosting. HOWEVER, you get what you pay for. I've
been so unhappy with them. My websites are down every other day. The support people
don't know what they're talking about. You have to open a "ticket" to get anything
looked at. And the tickets aren't responded to in 2 or more days. I WOULD NOT
RECOMMEND THEM TO MY WORST ENEMY.
- eApps - I just switched to these guys. So
far they've been awesome!
